Using Sound to Make Our Machines Better Communicators

My research investigates the use of spatial interactive audio as a way to enrich how humans interact with robots and smart environments. More specifically, I integrate loudspeakers into robots and IoT devices and then create immersive and responsive spatial audio content for these speaker distributions. By embedding sound into these technological devices I aim to influence how they are perceived by humans; eg. less artificial, less alien, more capable, more trustworthy. Among the application areas are social robots in health care & retirement contexts, and IoT environments in homes.
